Background
It is almost 10 years since the dot.com boom of the 1990s promised so much for consumers and businesses but delivered so little. However the investments made at that time in Telecoms technology caused a slower but more pragmatic evolution in the tools available to the industry. Now, a new wave of market opportunity is opening up, driven by the convergence of Communications, Entertainment and Advertising, and this time the technology, products and market have a chance to spectacularly align to create a new paradigm.
Intune Networks has lived through all of this, and is now ready to convert 10 years of R&D into a new product line that can deliver high value to the consumer, to business and to the network operator.
The Communications, Entertainment & Advertising (CEA) Industry has arrived!
The CEA market has been created by a proliferation of new IP-enabled consumer devices and business applications where expectations are blurring between what is communications and what is entertainment. Your computer is also your tv, your laptop is also your phone, your mobile phone is now your tv, and your tv is now your internet browser! It seems that the internet has opened up a world of possibilities and IP platforms have solved all the implementation issues. Wrong.
The internet is actually blocking the entire CEA industry from moving forward for two major reasons:
- There is not enough value in the internet supply chain to support growth
- It is almost impossible to guarantee high quality of service, particularly for any interactive, real-time or high-definition applications
The Problems Facing the Telecoms Industry
National carriers are expected to provide and manage high quality infrastructure, while passing much of the value through to the internet service portals. There is no viable business in providing “dumb pipes”.
From the internet service provider viewpoint, they are blocked from providing new and more valuable services by the fundamental quality of service problem of the internet itself as a global network. They need localised quality networks in each country around the globe.
The Market Opportunity for Telecoms Infrastructure Equipment
The networking industry is searching for a solution to these issues, a solution that creates the right value chain from business and consumer to internet service provider. Most importantly for operators, this solution must allow the operators to hold a sustainable and valuable position in that supply chain. We believe that solution has 2 key parts: firstly the use of IP platforms, and secondly the right infrastructure working under these platforms to enable high quality, unpredictable growth, large bandwidth delivery without the cost explosion.
